How much money do you spend each summer to cool your house? On average, U.S. households spend $375 or 17% of their energy budget on cooling expenses. But you can save money when you try five tips this summer.
1. Adjust the Thermostat Before you leave for work or vacation, raise the thermostat by seven to 10 degrees. Then, turn it back down to 78 degrees when you arrive home. Consider investing in a programmable thermostat, too, as you lower your cooling costs by up to 10 percent.
2. Replace Air Filters Dirty air filters in your home’s forced air system cut its efficiency by 2%. You’ll save money and enjoy a cooler home when you replace the filters at least once every three months or more frequently if necessary.
3. Turn on the Fan Your air conditioning unit requires double the amount of energy as a ceiling fan. So, simply turning on your fan can be a big boost to your summer cooling savings. If you don’t have a ceiling fan, a window or stand fan helps you feel cooler, too.
4. Close the Shades Sunny days invite you to throw open the window shades. All that sun produces heat gain and makes your home warm, however. Reduce heat gain by up to 45% when you close the shades.
5. Seal Air Leaks Summer-ize your home this season to reduce cooling costs. Start by sealing air leaks around the windows and doors. Then, tackle leaks in the air ducts to increase your cooling system efficiency by 20%.
You can save money on your cooling costs this summer. Which of these five money-saving tips will you try first?
